When I was diagnosed with diabetes, I dedicated my life to learning everything I could about the science behind health and weight.

for better weight and digestive health…
...and it didn’t just work for me, this is working for EVERYBODY.
If you’ve ever struggled with digestive issues, you know how frustrating it can be.
I tried every fad diet you can imagine.
Paleo, keto, vegetarian, liquid diets — someone even suggested I try a new Hollywood weight loss fad where you intentionally let bees sting you!
Honestly, I was open to anything at that point. But nothing worked.
I exercised, I did yoga, I had personal trainers who kicked my butt in the gym…
But I could not lose weight. I couldn’t figure out why things that worked for other people just never worked for me.
In 2003, I even had gastric bypass surgery, where they literally cut you open and make your stomach smaller.
After that, you can only eat about 600 calories a day of liquids. Basically, you starve yourself.
And if you have that surgery, you will lose weight. But here’s what you may not know…
The weight WILL come back once you start eating real meals again.
In fact, half of all people who have weight loss surgery gain a significant amount of weight back...and some people gain ALL of it back![1]
And that’s exactly what started happening to me.
So after trying every diet, exercise, weight loss fad and even expensive surgery, what’s the real secret to losing weight and conquering digestive discomfort?
Well, after years of research — and seeing the results for myself — Dr. Melina and I have come to one shocking conclusion:
The TRUE source of weight gain, digestive issues, and fatigue isn’t food, it’s actually one specific thing:
Leaky Gut.
Understanding gut health is what’s allowed me to not just lose 130 pounds, but KEEP it off for over 15 years.
The gut is also the key to

Your gut is not just a part of your health… your gut IS your health.
Your gut — also know as your gastrointestinal tract, or GI tract — is how your body turns food into nutrition.
When you eat food, it goes down into your stomach, where it gets broken down.
Then it starts moving down your GI tract.
Your GI tract absorbs all the good stuff from the food… the vitamins, the nutrients, the calories for energy.
And whatever is leftover is waste — or hey, let’s just call it what it is. Poop!
For how important your GI tract is, you’d think the walls of your gut would be super thick and strong, right?
But they actually need to be thin, so they can absorb all those nutrients from food.
In fact, the lining of your gut wall is only one cell thick! That’s the thinnest thing you can imagine.
So if your gut is overrun with bad bacteria — or if it becomes inflamed, for weeks and months and years on end —
Something very bad happens.
You start to get little “tears”, or “holes,” in your gut lining.
This is what we call Leaky Gut… tears in your gut lining allowing bad stuff to leak out into your body.
When you have leaky gut, the worst thing that leaks out the holes in your digestive tract is waste and toxins.
This waste is called lipopolysaccharides, but that’s just a fancy word for tiny particles of poop.
It sounds gross, but you need to hear it. When these toxic particles start leaking into your body, you get a whole host of health problems…
If these endotoxins get into your joints, they can cause aches and pain.[2]
If they get into your skin, they can cause itchiness, redness, acne, and rashes.[3]
If they get into your upper GI tract, they can cause heartburn and indigestion.[4]
If they get into your blood, they can even cause septic shock.
And if they get into your heart tissue, they can cause the kind of deadly health issues I worked with the American Heart Association trying to prevent… including heart disease, and even death.[5]
In other words, Leaky Gut is real, and it is a serious problem.
And that’s where I found myself years ago… plagued by Leaky Gut and bad bacteria, along with all the digestive discomfort, fatigue, and weight gain that comes with it.
So is gut health important?
I’d say that’s the understatement of the century!
Okay, congratulations on learning A LOT about gut health. By now you know more than most of your friends, and probably quite a few doctors too.
So let’s get to the good news…
If my gut isn’t healthy… how do I fix it?
This, to me, is the most important question in health.
Fixing your gut means getting rid of these frustrating problems and getting your body to work RIGHT.
Fixing your gut means you’ll absorb food properly, so you have TONS of energy.
Fixing your gut means you’ll say goodbye to unhealthy food cravings.
Fixing your gut helps control the way you store fat, meaning shedding pounds and inches from your waist.
Fixing your gut means being in a happier mood, so you actually WANT to do healthy things.
And fixing your gut means banishing digestive issues like bloating, gas, diarrhea and constipation...
So your insides feel GOOD again, like they’re supposed to.
And how do we do it?
Well, for me, dieting is NOT the answer.
In fact, let me get one thing out of the way...
I love food.
I’m from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Down south, eating is a way of life.
If it doesn’t taste good, we don’t touch it!
That means every meal — every single meal — is drenched in either salt, sugar, butter, lard — or all four combined!
And if you grew up like me, switching to some of these “healthy” diets can be a colossal task.
Which is why for millions of Americans, these diets never work.
I’ve done them all. And if you can completely eliminate sugar, or carbs, or go a full day without eating…
Well, my hat’s off to you, but that just isn’t for me. Whenever I lost weight like that, it all came back, and then some.
It’s just not sustainable.
So no, I don’t tell people there’s a “one size fits all” diet that will work for everyone.
Now that being said, there ARE foods that specifically improve your gut health, and these foods do improve gut health for pretty much everyone.
I call these “Digestive Jumpstarters” because they’re like a shortcut to results. If you include them in your daily diet, they supercharge your gut health, making any diet work better.
And there’s basically 3 categories of “Digestive Jumpstarters.”
First is Probiotics. These are the good bacteria I told you about earlier.
You have them in your gut already, but if you don’t have enough, it’s a main cause of the digestive issues you may be experiencing.
So Step #1 to better health is:
Eat More Probiotic Rich Foods
Usually, this is going to be foods that have been fermented, which means they are high in probiotic bacteria.
My favorites are probably:
Greek Yogurt
Sauerkraut
Olives
Kimchi
And the fermented tea drink Kombucha
These are all a great place to start. And you don’t need to take anything away from your diet… you just need to add these 5 things.
And no, I don’t think you need any of those crazy probiotic formulas with 35 billion CFUs… that stands for “colony forming units” of bacteria.
In my experience, that’s overkill. About 2 to 3 billion CFUs a day is plenty.
The thing about probiotics that most people don’t know is it’s not really about how much you have…
It’s about feeding them the exact right thing to make them work better.
If you feed your probiotics this one thing, it makes them naturally grow and multiply.
And what is that one thing?
It’s my second “Digestive Jumpstarter”...
Prebiotic Fiber
Prebiotic Fiber is one of the best things you can put in your body, bar none.
You see, all fiber is good for you. But not all fiber is prebiotic fiber.
Prebiotic fiber is a special kind of fiber that your body can’t digest. That means you eat it, and it gets all the way down to your gut in perfect condition.
Which is where your probiotics find it… and eat it!
And this is like POWER FOOD for probiotics. They use it to do all those good things in your body, like improve digestion, create energy, and burn calories.
So what foods have prebiotic fiber?
The easy ones to get are:
Onions
Garlic
Leeks
And Asparagus
But after trying every prebiotic plant you can think of, here’s a tip very few people know about:
The #1 most powerful prebiotic in the world is actually a plant called
Chicory Root
Chicory root contains a potent type of super-prebiotic called inulin.
Thousands of years ago in ancient Egypt, the egyptians used chicory roots to help digestive problems, but until recently, the modern world forgot about this remedy.
That is, until several recent clinical studies began showing that inulin may be one of the most potent and beneficial prebiotics on Earth.
The main benefit of inulin is probably on improving bowel movements.
Let’s face it — we don’t talk about going to the bathroom much in our society, but it’s probably one of the biggest factors in our daily happiness.
If you suffer from constipation, diarrhea, or painful cramping when going to the bathroom, it can really sap the joy from your day.
That’s where inulin comes in.
In 2014, the University of Madrid conducted an extensive meta-analysis of 252 subjects studied over the course of 18 years to determine the short and long-term effects of inulin on bowel function.
They studied effects on stool frequency — how often people can poop
Stool consistency — how firm and non-watery the bowel movements were
Transit time — how quickly food moved through the body
And hardness of stool — how soft and easy it was to pass
The researchers wanted to known if Inulin had an effect on any of these things.
Well, the research showed inulin improved ALL of them.41
Inulin has been shown to help provide the kind of bowel movements we all want:
Not too hard, not too soft, easy to pass without straining, and more frequent for people suffering with occasional constipation.
This is thanks to the “cleaning out” effect of prebiotic fiber. Have you ever had to call a plumber over to “snake” a clogged drain?
Well, that’s what inulin does inside your body. It’s a gentle, 100% natural way to unclog what’s wrong inside you.
The best thing about prebiotic fiber for bowel issues is that you generally don’t need to wait long to see the effects. Many users report the best BM’s of their life… within just the first few days of use.
Dr. Melina — who has spent years coaching people about how to get rid of digestive problems — always tells me:

44 adult subjects who had been advised by doctors to lose 5% of their body weight were given either inulin or cellulose, a different kind of fiber.
Well, after 9 weeks, both groups had successfully lost about 5% of their body weight.
But according to researchers:
“The inulin group lost SIGNIFICANTLY more weight between 9 and 18 weeks.”
In fact, the inulin group eventually lost up to 7.6% of their body weight!44
In other words, inulin helped people lose weight… KEEP it off… and CONTINUE losing weight for weeks and weeks to come.
The study also found the amazing side benefit of having a positive effect on fat levels in the liver.
So called “deep fat” around the organs is a major health hazard, and is also one of the the main reasons for a big, protruding belly. It’s the worst kind of fat in the body, and something you definitely want less of, even if you’re skinny.
And several studies, both in animals and humans, have found that inulin can even increase calcium absorption and support healthy bone density… which is something we all need, especially as we get older.45,46
So for all these reasons, I tell people:
Eat the Prebiotic chicory root daily to boost weight loss, fix digestive problems, and achieve the best bowel movements of your life!
Now, if you can get these two things into your diet — probiotics from fermented foods, and prebiotics from chicory root — you’re going to notice a difference in your health.
You’re going to have a bit more energy, fewer food cravings, and feel just a little cleaner on the inside.
And that’s awesome! When I started eating more prebiotics and probiotics, it was a major step forward in achieving my health goals.
But as important as this was, it actually paled in comparison to what was my last, and probably most significant health achievement:
